Electronic Health Records

Health information technology (health IT) is rapidly changing the way health care is delivered in the United States, bringing with it exciting possibilities for improving the efficiency and quality of patient care. It is critical for clinicians who are adopting health IT to select the right systems for their practice and incorporate the technology effectively into their daily care processes. Electronic health records (EHRs) are the IT foundation for medical offices.

IPRO offers a wide range of services related to EHR selection, adoption and optimization. We work with a broad array of clients and partners, from government agencies to individual practices, to maximize the impact of EHRs as tools to improve the quality of patient care. Over the past five years, IPRO has worked with over 500 practices on EHR-focused projects under federal, state and private contracts.

In our role as the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) for New York State, IPRO will be hosting and coordinating two statewide learning and action networks (LANs) dedicated to helping offices improve their clinical performance and their use of electronic health records in day-to-day practice.  One LAN focuses on cardiac health and the other the on aspects of office organization and patient-centered medical home care delivery. Participation in both LANs will be open to all practices in New York.

WHY AN EHR?

Whether you run a small family practice, are a nurse practitioner, are part of a large primary care network or are a specialty physician, implementing an EHR and integrating it fully into your office brings with it a host of patient-related benefits. This is on top of the long-term cost savings associated with the increased efficiency EHRs can offer on the business side of your practice.

HOW IPRO CAN HELP

The initial technology investment is only one piece of redesigning your office to run more efficiently with the help of an EHR. Equally important is finding the best ways to incorporate your EHR into the daily processes of your practice. This starts with selecting the right EHR system for your office, moves to implementing the system correctly and finishes with redesigning your practice work flow to maximize the potential of the EHR and deliver the best, most efficient care possible for your patients. IPRO can help you with all three of these phases.

IPRO Co-Authors Book Chapter on EHRs

While EHRs hold great promise for supporting improvements in quality in the primary care setting, providers will need to improve their knowledge of systems and/or hire additional staff in order to maximize effectiveness. That’s the conclusion of a case study book chapter just published by experts at the Primary Care Development Corporation, Uptown Medical Group (UMG) in the Bronx and IPRO. The chapter analyzes UMG’s participation in quality improvement projects requiring the ability to “measure, assess and optimally use” EHR data.
