Basics about the Influenza Immunization (flu shot)

Winter means it’s time to think about preventing the seasonal flu, a short name for the influenza virus. If you have health problems like diabetes, heart or kidney diseases, you are at greater risk for serious complications of the flu. These complications can include bacterial pneumonia, sinus infections, dehydration, and worsening of your health enough that if you do not take preventive steps it can threaten your life.

The flu is very contagious and easily spreads from person to person. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests people should get a flu shot every year.
