Basics about the Pneumococcal Immunization (pneumonia shot)

Pneumococcal disease is caused by Streptococcus pneumonia bacteria. If you are 65 year and older or have health problems like diabetes, heart failure, asthma and/or lung diseases, you are at higher risk for getting pneumonia. This is a serious illness that, if you do not take preventive steps, could lead to death.

Most people only need to get the pneumonia shot once. If you are at high risk, you may need a booster shot. Adults who received their first dose younger than age 65 years should have a second dose at age 65 years or older based on whether 5 years has elapsed since the previous dose and on their doctor’s recommendation.

What You Can Do

Check with your doctor and find out when you should get the pneumonia shot and how often. It is important to take steps to help your body fight infections by getting plenty of sleep, eating healthy, staying active and not smoking.
